Our plan as we discussed with them prior to the game was to put early heat on this DP team that was not used to losing to see how they would respond. The Joes did exactly that as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning. Nick, Garrett, Adam, Jacob, and Patrick scored as Adam (double), Patrick, and Peter had 1st inning hits. After DP got back into the game with 3 in their half of the 2nd, the Joes pulled away again with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. Taco and Mason scored on hits from Mason, Mark, and Nick. The teams traded runs in the 3rd as Jacob scored on a hit from Taco. For the second straight night, the Joes took control of the game in the 4th as we shut them out in their half, and then posted 2 more in ours as Hans and Kai scored on hits from Hans and Nick. We plated one more in the 5th as Jacob scored his third run of the game behind a Patrick single. DP showed why they have won 8 games as they battled in the 6th but came up 4 runs short in an 11-7 defeat.
Peter started on the mound and pitched our longest outing of the year - going 4 1/3 innings and giving up only 4 runs. Great outing Peter. Jacob finished hurling 1 2/3 innings walking only one batter.
The leather was flashing all over the field against this good-hitting DP team. Adam had a 6-3 put-out to end the 1st and had the "Web Gem" of the night with a twisting, turning catch of a tough pop-up in the 2nd. Garrett ended the second with what seems like his 100th smooth 4-3 put-out of the year. In the 3rd, Adam was again in on the action as he was in the right place backing up a pickoff attempt at 3B. When the ball eluded our 3B, Adam was right there to scoop the ball and fire to a waiting Hans at home who applied the tag. Adam then ended the inning on a 6-3 put-out. The game got dicey in the 4th as the Joes were clinging to a 8-4 lead when DP loaded the bases with no outs. However, Peter did not back down as got the first out with a 3-2 count K. With the bases still loaded, DP was thinking big inning until the next hard hit ball found Nick's glove at SS. Nick quickly shoveled to Garrett at 2B for the force out. Not satisfied, the G Man made a perfect turn and fired to Henry 1B for the inning-ending double play! Definitely the play of the night! Wow! In the 5th, Nick got his first caught stealing as he fired a laser to 3B to allow Mason to apply the tag and nail the base runner. Jacob had a 1-3 put-out to start the 6th. It sometimes goes unnoticed, but Henry gets (and has earned) the majority of innings at 1B. With the longer bases our IF has a tough time making easy throws to 1B, but Henry has done a great job all year of catching the ball at 1B.
A really good effort against a good team that was used to winning. The Joes ran the bases better and continued their great work at the plate.
