Grit. Determination. Heart. The Joes showed it all as they battled back from 2 deficits of 4 runs and a deficit of 3 to post a 13-8 victory. Although the score indciated otherwise this was a hard fought game that was not decided until the last out was recorded. The coaches and I have commented several times this year that this squad is winning games that we would not have won last year and this was one of those games. The Joes are showing the league that they have matured and have found a competitiveness that they were just learning last year. What team of 10/11 year olds would stay poised and not panic when down 4-0 after the first half-inning and down 7-3 after 3 innings? Not the Joes. They kept getting back in the game only to have the Fairfax squad widen the lead again and again. But the Joes stayed the course and bounced back with a 5 run 3rd to take the lead and iced it in the 4th with another 4 runs. A great win that teaches them to never give up, never panic, and just keep playing.
Offensively, the Joes flexed their muscle by plating 13 runs on 12 hits. Matthew (3), Henry (2), Garrett (2), Patrick, Peter, Hans, Adam, and Jon Jon all had hits and runs were scored by Henry (3), Matthew (3), Peter (2), Adam (2), Garrett, Patrick, and Hans. The Joes struck out only 4 times and continued to learn that if you put the ball in play lots of good things can happen! A great offensive game.
On the hill, Matthew fired 2 innings getting 3 K's. Patrick K'd 4 in his 2 innings, and Peter closed it out with a perfect 5th inning.
In the field, put outs were made by Matthew from the mound, Garrett from 2B, Patrick from the mound,, Peter from the mound, and Hans from 3B, and Adam made a nice play on a liner for an out from his SS spot.
All in all, a good win against a good team and a great display of confidence. The Joes never looked rattled when they got behind and that poise allowed them to post their 4th win in 5 attempts.
And, for the second time in a row, we get healthier as Jacob found his way from the training room to the field. Welcome back Jacob!
